The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has stated that in 2018 it will start auditing whether colleges and universities are in compliance with the Safeguards Rule in the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. ED has also stated that it now expects institutions that “suspect” a data breach to report the suspected breach to ED on the day of detection.
