Husch Blackwell Chief Executive Jamie Lawless recently spoke with The American Lawyer to discuss the firm's performance in 2023, a year in which it invested in people.

The firm added 111 attorneys and had a fall associate class of 56. Lawless noted that nearly 70% of those joining the firm did so in the second half of 2023.

“A lot of it has to do with career development and planning for our talented lawyers. It’s really a combination of lateral growth we’ve experienced as well as homegrown lawyers being elevated within the ranks,” Lawless told The American Lawyer.

Lawless emphasized how the firm's investments—in people and infrastructure—are done with future growth in mind. Looking toward 2024, she said the firm is planning a new office opening in the Southeast, and will look to continue to grow in ways to better serve clients.

“The business that we’re in is a long-term play. The client relationships we’re building are long-term relationships, so as we look to 2024, it’s no different than how we’ve looked at our business in the past,” she said. “We’ll make sure we have sustainable client business.”
