As Conflicts Counsel, Anthony serves as an attorney to attorneys.
When an undergraduate criminology course sparked his interest, Anthony discovered a fascination with the big questions, philosophical foundations and practical implications of the law. He quickly realized this was also a field that would fulfill his passion for helping people: in many situations, attorneys are the only individuals who can truly help, and Anthony found the idea of a service-oriented career deeply satisfying.
After earning his law degree, Anthony took a position in the conflicts department of a law firm looking for attorneys with Spanish language skills. He soon discovered that he loved the analytical nature of his work, as well as the broad knowledge of the law and his firm that it required. Anthony chose to build his career in conflicts, later progressing to a role as conflicts counsel. He joined Husch Blackwell in 2022, enthusiastic about the excellent reports he’d heard on the firm’s culture and leadership.
Anthony analyzes guidelines for outside counsel and request for proposal requirements, reviews client contracts, and identifies potential conflicts of interest. His role is to always know what can go wrong in legal representation—and assume that it will. When conflicts are identified, Anthony advises attorneys on how best to clear them and assists with the preparation of relevant waivers. Where necessary, he also counsels attorneys on clients and matters that cannot be taken on.
While Anthony’s role is an internal one, he helps ensure that clients receive the best support possible in line with ethical and professional conduct rules. Anthony looks out for firm attorneys so that they can look out for clients.
