B. Alicia Johnson

Attorney
Overview

Alicia delivers on clients’ patent needs.

With a solid scientific background, Alicia assists clients in the biomedical, chemical, electrochemical, aerospace, and mechanical industries in drafting and prosecuting patent applications. She is particularly experienced with aerospace engineering and rocket technologies.

Alicia’s goal is to get clients the patents they need, and she works closely with engineers at client companies to understand the technology, mechanics, and science behind each innovation. She also coordinates with in-house counsel to develop and execute the client’s patent portfolio strategies—giving her an in-depth understanding not only of the inner workings of each technological development, but also of how these new innovations fit in with overall business needs and goals.

Prior to pursuing a legal career, Alicia earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry and took a position as chemist with a medical device company. She quickly realized that lab work wasn’t her calling and that she wanted a career that would let her go further—but also a career that would still draw on the chemistry degree she’d worked hard for. When she discovered patent law, she knew it was a perfect fit.

Alicia thrives on learning about cutting edge technologies, and she sees her job as translating between engineers and attorneys—in other words, ensuring that the legal examiners who review clients’ applications fully understand the innovations at stake. Clients often comment that their engineering teams love working with Alicia and appreciate her fierce advocacy and dedication to getting their patent claims granted.

Alicia is also known as a forward-thinking listener: she recognizes that a huge part of her role is listening and understanding, with an ear toward questions clients haven’t yet considered. Alicia has a gift for spotting potential gaps that may halt the application process later—and getting those gaps filled before she files. A doer and a deliverer, Alicia achieves the protection clients need for the innovations that drive their businesses.
