Client Feedback, Chambers USA 2023

Overview

Jen is a hands-on litigator who defends businesses in toxic tort and product liability matters in some of the most dangerous jurisdictions across the United States.

Often taking a lead role in toxic tort cases in the Chicago area, Jen has served as national coordinating counsel for toxic tort claims and defended clients in repetitive litigation and pre-litigation claims stemming from product liability issues and recalls. She regularly takes and defends depositions and appears in court on behalf of clients in asbestos, toxic tort and product liability matters.

Jen works closely with clients to uncover the facts of cases by talking with company leaders, employees and expert witnesses. She knows the importance of keeping up with clients, understanding their views on the case, and learning their concerns and objectives.

As the attorney who runs the firm’s Product Perspective: Complex Tort & Product Law blog, Jen stays on the cutting edge of case law in that area. In addition to product liability and toxic tort experience, Jen’s broad range of litigation experience includes commercial litigation, white collar investigations, insurance litigation and contract disputes.

Jen serves as the Deputy Managing Partner of Husch Blackwell's virtual office, The Link.

Experience
  • Secured a grant of summary judgment from an Illinois trial court—later affirmed by the Appellate Court of Illinois, Second District—in personal injury litigation involving a workplace injury incurred by a staffing agency employee. We asserted successfully that our client was a borrowing employer under section 1(a)(4) of Illinois' Workers' Compensation Act, and therefore, plaintiff's claims were barred by the Act's exclusive-remedy provision applicable to borrowing and loaning employers. Torrijos v. International Paper Company, 2021 IL App (2d) 1911502021
  • Served as national coordinating counsel for defense of asbestos litigation on behalf of large global company. Supervised local counsel nationwide and developed global strategies for defense of these matters, including settlement and trial strategies.
  • Managed automotive tort and warranty claims across several jurisdictions, including pre-litigation claims. Negotiated dismissals and favorable settlements.
  • Represented nuclear power plants in insurance disputes over outage and property damage claims. Assisted one client in obtaining favorable settlement through mediation.
  • Represented food manufacturer in contract litigation dispute with commercial customer. Obtained favorable summary judgment and appellate rulings.
  • Obtained summary judgment in personal injury/product liability case where plaintiff alleged that our client's product had improper warnings which led to a chemical explosion.
  • Successfully represented manufacturing company in a two-count tort action concerning injuries suffered by a truck driver who alleged significant injury from a fall while on the client's property.

Outside the Office

Jen likes to stay active.

She enjoys running 5Ks, half marathons and more; cycling; and playing tennis. She is also an avid gardener. Jennifer plants vegetables in her raised beds and has gardens in her front yard and backyard, as well as 20 to 30 potted plants. All that vegetation serves as great conversation starters for her neighbors.
